JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 06:23 PM Let's start from the beginning.
1988 Mazda MX-6 GT
Grey faded paint
Ugly Maroon Interior
2.2L SOHC Intercooled Turbo

JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 06:23 PM decided i didn't like the maroon interior. time for a swap.
dash out

no pics of dash in but it looks like this

also did a front seat and drivers side door swap (the grey one needed a lock, handle, and window regulator. a door swap was easier.)

JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 06:23 PM car was purchased with a transmission stuck in first. so it was time to get that taken care of.
took a few shots during a break.

turns out it needed a new clutch too.

JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 06:24 PM okay. so in the time between the previous post and the next one (about 6 months) alot happened.
i lowered the car, bought a set of FC3C BBS rims and good tired. autoX'd a bunch. and made it to the local(ish) drag strip. ran a 14.8 @ 95mph. 11psi on stock turbo. 2.5 60' times each and every time.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=V94f932gDAM
that was the last weekend the drag strip was open.
i then installed a tbird hybrid turbo and immediately felt the difference in power.
here's how the car looked after alot of that work, but before the EVO Intercooler, tbird, and new trunk lid.

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/4906/1001152mediumow3.jpg
then on december 6th, while bringing the car home to store it for the winter, i hit a patch of dry ice at about 8mph and rear ended the car in front of me. i had no bumper, so the intercooler, radiator, light supports were smashed and ruined. at that point i decided to put into motion everything needed for the motor swap.
JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 06:26 PM seperated the tranny from the motor.
looks like i have some cleaning up to do

TJGoSurf 05-16-2008, 06:30 PM That's not the turbo ford 4 cylinder is it?
JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 06:35 PM define "ford"
its the mazda motor that was found in the 89 - 92 ford probe GT
they just put a ford badge on the valve cover.
it is not the 2.3 that is in the old thunderbird turbocoupe
Tofuball 05-16-2008, 06:57 PM A rather reliable engine IMHO.
JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 06:59 PM it really is. i've had 2 GT's and my last one went to 225k miles when the head gasket finally went out. only reason it went out was because the water pump failed and i kept driving it and it overheated.....every day for a week
TJGoSurf 05-16-2008, 07:01 PM I'm not knocking the motor. I was just curious. They produce any decent power?
JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 07:22 PM define "decent"
everybody thinks numbers tell everything so its hard to say what people call decent.
my basically stock 89 GT put down 146hp and 202ft/lbs of torque. that was with a blown head gasket and 215k miles.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ul7oI265bCw
fyi tahts how they come from the factory. at the wheels rated at 145hp and 190 ft/lbs torque.
Tofuball 05-16-2008, 07:38 PM While it's out, why not MegaSquirt it, go wasted spark, and throw the AFM out the window? :) You can use the RX-7 leading coil you already have and just find another RX-7 leading coil . . .
JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 07:41 PM i have MS all ready to go.
the thing is. i'm going with the factory ECU and electronics for now becuase i dont want to tune it this year. i want to drive it.
i'll MS it over winter probably and have it tuned for spring.
i have 2 MS ecus in my possession so i think i'll be set ;)
JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 07:44 PM oh. i've also got 2 sets of FC3C BBS rims and a set of 16x8 BBS rims to go on the car. one set autoX, one set street, one set strip :D
Tofuball 05-16-2008, 07:51 PM Sweet!
I remembered that I have a giant box of RX-7 leading and trailing coils. So I have enough to start a war if you need any ;)
JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 07:55 PM thx i'll let ya know. :)
Tofuball 05-16-2008, 07:58 PM NP: Keep us posted on this project :D
JesterMX6 05-16-2008, 08:01 PM oh will do for sure. lol.
i'm so stoked about this thing its not even funny.
i also really really miss boost :(.
JesterMX6 05-17-2008, 02:54 PM OH SNAP!!!!!

WOOOOOOT!!!!!
Tofuball 05-17-2008, 03:01 PM I might have a logicon + idiot cluster if you need
JesterMX6 05-17-2008, 03:17 PM thanks but idk how well that'll do me. all the idiot lights are in the MX-6's OEm dash. and tahts what i'll be using witha little bondo work i think.
as of right now, i'm not collecting any parts. i need to focus on just getting the motor done and in there and being able to drive it. until i drive it, my wrists will continue to bleed.
i'm sure once i find what parts i need later on i'll be posting up WTB ads everywhere from my local forum to here to rx7club
Cosby 05-18-2008, 11:48 AM Should have just come to spartanburg and bought the finished MX7 sitting at my warehouse. Just needs a megasquirt. Let me know when you hit the first snag :) I don't remember how much I posted about the swap.
JesterMX6 05-19-2008, 11:57 AM actually one of my first questions after looking at the car a little closer is
what in the world did u do for the gauge cluster?????
did u just cut the Rx7 dash a lil wider to fit the mx6 cluster in? or did u just wire in the gauges in a different way.
Cosby 05-19-2008, 02:10 PM I used the mx6 gauges. I actually even printed a background on photopaper that said "MX-7" on it. It's pretty neat. The ultimate plan was to go to autometer tach, speedo, etc/
JesterMX6 05-19-2008, 06:07 PM so i take it u just honed out the gauge area with a dremel? (the rx7 cluster is smaller)
another thing i'm coming up on is the flywheel/clutch/mating to the transmission whole thing.
i would assume, since it'll be using the bellhousing off the b2200 (that is correct right?) that i'm going to be using a b2200 flywheel and clutch and pressure plate? the probelm there is that it woulnd't ever support that kind of power. does the rx7 clutch etc fit the mx6? i can't find any of ur posts where u list what parts u used on the swap. :p
JesterMX6 05-26-2008, 02:03 AM bump
what clutch/flywheel setup did you use?
JesterMX6 06-20-2008, 03:16 PM bump
what clutch/flywheel setup did you use?
