Impreza75 03-12-2002, 02:27 PM Well the Rally of Corsica Italy has just finished, up and I'm a little peeved at the results. That's because they don't have a gearshift like a typical car, they have sequential gearshifts, they just flick the stick one way to go up a gear and the other way to go down a gear, no clutch or anything......kinda gay if you ask me, same thing with the damn F1 transmission in Ferraris and the new SGMII in M3s, it takes a lot of fun and skill involved in racing and replaces it with a computer......I mean what next, are they going to design computers to drive the cars around the track just because they could consistently do it faster than a human driver
Impreza75 03-25-2002, 06:53 PM when your hauling ass over a gravel servace at close or over 100mph, with only of inches of clearance on both ends. And every second can decide if you live die, win or lose. You don't want to worry about a damn clutch. also makes it easier to use the ebrake and to use the break with your left foot. Same way with F1 cars, going through turns at the speeds those things are capable of a clutch just won't do the trick. Need to shift fast. Plus you don't have to take your hands off the wheel, thats the most important thing. Or like in Rally cars, you don't have to take your hand to far from it, just a little flick and your shifted.
StockForNow 03-25-2002, 09:22 PM Where do you watch it now.. Since Speevision is now Nascar Channel... Gay ass Speed Channel...
Punter 03-25-2002, 09:32 PM They got by for years without sequential transmissions, sure sequential transmissions are faster, and it's important to shift fast, and I'm sure it's nice not to have to worry about the clutch but wouldn't it also be safer to just not have to worry about driving the car too, that way the driver could never make a mistake and cause a wreck? Why not install a computer to control the throttle too because I'm sure that's a pain in the ass as well, it's just that to me, racing should be about each driver driving the car to the best of their abilities, not just sitting there occupying space in the car while a computer does half the work.
Impreza75 03-25-2002, 09:51 PM They use the best of their abilities. Rally and F1 drivers are the best drivers in the world. You mean you don't think they use the best of their abilities and are just sitting there taking up space and letting computer do the work cause they don't use a clutch and a slow shifter?<img src="http://www.spartanburgracing.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>?
Punter 03-25-2002, 10:14 PM No, I don't mean at all that they aren't amazing drivers or don't use the best of their abilities but the fact is that until recently a driver's skill at shifting used to be a much larger factor in the outcome of a race, so while they still use their abilities they don't use as much of them, and if the current trend continues then eventually they will just be occupying space in the car
Uglymexican19 03-25-2002, 10:20 PM wouldnt help more to have a regular clutch adn all to slow down the car on turns by downshifting instead of the breaks
Uglymexican19 03-25-2002, 10:21 PM wouldnt help more to have a regular clutch adn all to slow down the car on turns by downshifting instead of the breaks
Punter 03-25-2002, 10:23 PM They can still downshift, they just tap a little stick to do it instead of having to disengage and engage the clutch
Uglymexican19 03-25-2002, 10:39 PM oh ok, well thats cool then. But yeah i bet that it would be more challenging to have the clutch and all...
