My university does surplus auctions, you might be able to find one of their laptops cheap on ebay. http://stores.ebay.com/University-of-Missouri-Surplus they add stuff every weekday so it's worthwhile to look.

T2, Craigslist has sick deals on super-cheap laptops all the time. You shouldn't have to pay any more than about a hundred bucks for one. You can get a 12v->110v car converter at Radio Shack as well if you find one with a dead/no battery.
