So I have had my 360 for a couple years, and a couple months ago it decided it would forget how to read games, movies, cd's... itts not the RROD, as i still get to the console, it just says unable to read disc... everytime, for every cd...
should i send it in for the 100 bucks and extra warranty or for the time being throw one of these in there?

The disc drive and motherboard are mated IIRC...so a new drive will work but will ban you from XBL

The HDD and motherboard are "mated" but the DVDROM is not.

Send it in for the extra one year warranty. Bitch at them and they will cut the cost from 100 to 50.

Mine does this every so often. It made some pretty nasty scratches in my Forza 2 disk, too... WTF causes that?

theres a spindle in the disc drive thats supposed to hold the disc tight, but looses its grip over time...
my ps2 used to do that... the cure was to take some regular tape and put some around the hole on the CD. like this:

PS2 is 400 times shittier than the 360.
I think the DVD drive and MB are mated.

holy crap, you're right. The firmware on the DVD drive actually has an encryption key flashed to it. I didn't think MS would be THAT paranoid. You'd have to pull the firmware off your original drive and then flash the new drive. It isn't TOO hard to do but you're honestly better off just bitching your ass off and paying $50. If they won't do it for $50 file a BBB report against MS and they will.
As far as the scratched discs go, MS knows about the problem and has a replacement program. I think We had to do it for one of ours.
good writeup on replacement/spoofing a dvd drive on xbox 360 (http://www.360-hq.com/xbox-tutorials-61.html)

Well, I got mine used and flashed to play backups, so I doubt any replacement program is going to help me out any...
Question about that diagram, Squirrel. Is that image of the TOP of the CD or the BOTTOM?

My Original 360 I got in Oct 2006 died in Nov. 2007. It wasn't the RROD so the warranty had expired by about 2 weeks. They wanted 100 bucks and I cursed out habibi left and right until I got it down to 50. I got a 1 year warranty and the 360 they sent me back (a different one) was awesome. That is; until the DVD drive stopped playing movies. I don't care too much about the inability to play movies as it still plays games without a problem, but I MAY send it in for another one right before the warranty expires.

my steps to glory....
1: Call M$
2: Bitch incessantly
3: Bitch my way to a $50 repair
4: Pics
5: Profit?
Continue using my XBL account instead of the shitty PSN to waste away on COD4
I BARELY played my xbox for the first 2 years I had it... it prolly woulda lasted only a couple months of "normal" play...
Typing this post makes me furious at M$ because I like my 360 WAY more than the PS3...
