The list correlates numbers of each 1999-2001 model passenger vehicle thought to be on the road with the frequency that it is stolen to determine which cars thieves want most often.
Top stolen vehicles
1999-2001 model year cars with the highest theft claim frequencies per 1,000 insured vehicles on the road in a year
Acura Integra 21.7
Jeep Wrangler 8.5
Jeep Cherokee 4WD 6.6
Honda Prelude 6.4
Mitsubishi Mirage
(2-door) 6.2
Chrysler 300M 5.9
Hyundai Tiburon 5.5
Dodge Intrepid 5.1
Mitsubishi Mirage
(4-door) 5.1
Chrysler LHS 5.0
Average for all cars 2.6
The institute, based in Arlington, Virginia, is funded by auto insurers that gathers data on the ways in which insurance losses vary among different kinds of vehicles. It is an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Theft investigators suspect that Integras are so popular with thieves because of their parts, according to Kim Hazelbaker, the institute's senior vice president.
"Many of those parts, like the more powerful engine, end up on modified Honda Civics," Hazelbaker said. The Civic and Integra share the same platform.
The Integra was stolen with a frequency of 21.7 times per 1,000 insured vehicles on the road in a year, according to the institute's study.
The Integra was stolen more than eight times as often as the average car and 2.5 times more frequently than the Jeep Wrangler -- the vehicle second on the list -- according to the institute. The Wrangler is stolen, the institute said, 8.5 times per 1,000 insured vehicles.

My insurance has always been cheap, but then again, I've never owned anything newer than a '76. It's the same with yearly taxes which is about $13, and less than $500 a year for the insurance. Plus, no car payment which helps keep the insurance low by not having to carry collision insurance. So in some ways it pays to have an old car. Alot easier to work on too.

I had to hotwire a friends accord when it got broken into and the ignition got mangled. It was conveniently color coded and placed so a paper clip reached perfectly. The cover even snaps off easily! How nice of honda.

Insurance rates are determined on several different factors, including the actual TYPE of car u own, so anything that would be considered hi performance, i.e. sports cars, like a turbo charged engine will tend to have a higher rate than something none turbo. That wagon would probably be considered a family type and would therefore have a cheeper rate. Ur age plays a part in it too, u'll see ur rate come down when u reach the 21-25 age bracket. U'll also be a more experienced driver then, that's why the rates for first time drivers is so high, and I have found this out just recently, for parents that have a car that they carry collision on, that first time driver is listed as a driver of that vehicle.
My insurance is with Driver's Choice. They were very cheep compaired to what I was expecting to have to pay since having my license suspended back in '92 so I've only been a licensed driver now for little over 2 yrs. Maybe u might want to check them out, u may get a cheeper rate with them.
