Vista Discussion

I'm probably not as up-to-date with Vista as I should be. From what I've read it isn't going to offer much more than XP, except multimedia stuff that I won't use, which a large percentage is already available on XP.

Two cool things I remember:
1: 3d desktop like linux. You can have like 6 desktops and spin them around and such... even implementing a touch screen monitor. I wouldn't use this personally because... well, I'm a performance freak and the extra crap takes performance.

2: Being able to use usb-drives as a RAM. Supposedly you plug them in, and with a couple of clicks you have extra RAM. I can see where this could be pretty useful, and with the speed of usb 2.0 I imagine it'd help out nearly as much as "real" memory.

What's everyone elses opinions and such of vista? Any cool new features that I'm ignorant to?

We had a beta version loaded here at work. I didn't get to mess with it much but it seems like could be beneficial to the home user. In a work enviroment there is way too many extras

My impression as well.

Why? When you're sitting at your computer, you're probably browsing the internet, listening to music, talking to people, or playing a game. You can do all of that on one platform. Virtual machines suck a dick, yes i've used them, and yes I think they're pointless for the most part. Why do you want to kill system resources for unneeded operating systems? So that you can listen to music on one, browse the internet on your linux, and constantly be trying to tweak osx to accept the new piece of hardware you bought? It's pointless to 99% of people, and usually the ones that say "virtual machines are so cool" are looking for nothing more than a tad bit of recognition as being "computer smart"... You get no cool points from me for stupid shit.

I would agree....the usefulness of this in a real world situation, at least in my experience, is next to nothing.

I use a Mac. It's stable, great for pornography, IRC, porn, 4chan, irc, porn, etc. However, I have programs (Multisim) that only run on windows. Using a vmachine I can run everything on one machine.

Also, if you do any software testing or development there's a huge advantage to using vmachines rather than workstations.

+1.

For what the average person uses a PC for on a regular basis, having multiple operating systems is pointless. In high school I had a PC running Red Hat, W98, and W2K and I did exactly that same thing on all platforms. That shit lasted about a month before I couldn't take it any longer.

All that damn partitioning, setting it up with multiple hard drives through the boot menu in the bios is an all out mess, and getting all of your hardware to work in Linux can be a real PITA. My TV Tuner would crash in linux all the time.

I'd rather have two machines and multiple monitors before I ever deal with that shit again.

As for Vista, I had a beta copy, and it was awful. It was a relatively early release, so I can't make any harsh judgements against it, but it sure as hell wasn't stable. I'm not opposed to change, but if Vista doesn't offer me significantly more than what XP Pro SP2 already has, i'm sticking with XP.
